Emerging Cultural Leaders Training one year pilot project: “What are the skills, roles and responsibilities of the world’s young cultural leaders in today’s society?”
2012-2013
Phakama, in partnership with Nelson Fernandez (NFA International Arts & Culture), will deliver a year long training with emerging cultural leaders from India, Indonesia, South Africa, the Philippines and the UK (one from each country). The Emerging Cultural Leaders Training aims to support young people ready to move into leadership positions through residential training, placements, mentoring, coaching, online dialogue, international exchanges and small-to-medium-scale productions, delivered by the trainees themselves, both at local and/or at transnational levels. The group’s first meeting will take place in London, as an intensive residential course, during Phakama Pop Up Festival, June 2012. It will involve an exploratory training process investigating the skills needed for new cultural leaders in today’s financially and environmentally challenged world. It will provide a route to leadership progression for young participants and a laboratory for fresh thinking for all those involved in key questions determining the future of cultural exchange and intercultural dialogue. After the initial two weeks’ residential, the trainees will embark on a year-long training programme culminating on an online and physical showcase of trainees’ work and a graduation ceremony.
